Artist statement: Participating in the You Are Not Alone Murals project has been such a rewarding experience. Being part of a collective of artists with a singular goal of giving people hope through art is massively fulfilling. Having personally struggled with mental health at different stages, this project has a lot of significance to me.
I created a piece of art that was meant to feel all encompassing with the oversized 'NOT ALONE' playing a larger role in the piece. Also looking at the juxtaposition of the lettering you're forced to focus on each layer individually, which is meant to convey the idea of looking deeper at what someone is going through to make them feel seen. I feel so honored to be part of the project and thankful for the support from the YANAM team and fellow artists.
Harun Zankel is a lettering artist and muralist who uses energetic brush-script lettering to transforms public spaces into sources of inspiration with thought provoking messages. His art explores community, social and environmental issues, self-reflection and the ridiculousness of the human experience. He has created artwork for a variety of clients including New York Presbyterian, Visa, The Graham & Co Hotel, ArtWorks Trenton and Adda Art Gallery (Spain).
